Lowndes column: Pathway to Supercars

Craig Lowndes discusses the current pathway to Supercars and compares it to his arrival in the series in his exclusive column in V8X Supercar Magazine issue #99.

"The Super2 category is now a fantastic training ground," writes Lowndes.

"It's designed not only for drivers but also for engineers, team owners, mechanics to develop and get the experience that they need to step up. And I think that if you're successful in the Super2 category, there's no doubt that you're good enough to step up into the main game and be competitive.

"I'm also a fan of Super2 wildcards being invited into the main game because that only accelerates their development and adds to the competition and talking points in the series."

Lowndes also discusses the role open-wheel categories such as Formula Ford, Formula Holden and Formula 3000 played in his formative years and the prospects of the Formula 5000 series being developed by Supercars.

"I grew up watching the original Formula 5000 category and they were amazing cars," writes Lowndes.

"The prototype of the new Formula 5000 car looks great and it's sure to be a hit with the fans.

"Hopefully, though, we don't saturate the market with too many categories because you'd rather see less series with bigger grids than more categories all struggling for numbers."
