Shannons Supercar Showdown returns for second season
The Shannons Supercar Showdown reality television show will return for a second season in 2012, to determine who will join Grant Denyer in a wildcard entry at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.
The show will air Monday nights at 6:30pm (AEST) on 7Mate, moving into a prime-time slot this season, with an all-new cast of 10 up and coming drivers competing to win a place in the race.
"There will be twists and turns to keep the contestants on their toes and V8 fans on the edge of their seats," said Denyer.
"It's great to have the series rewarded with a promotion to prime-time on Monday nights. I believe it's the first time that Australian motorsport has been telecast in prime-time."
While the 10 contestants have not been named as yet, there will be international drivers from the United States and New Zealand along with two female drivers.
Last season's series saw Mildura teenager Cameron Waters win to become the youngest ever starter at Bathurst at 17 years of age, going on to join the Kelly Racing-affiliated Dunlop Series team, Dreamtime Racing, in 2012.
Team owners Rick and Todd Kelly will again act as judges in the series.
"This project is close to our hearts at Kelly Racing as it provides the opportunity for race fans to watch as we unearth new driver talent and pit them against the challenges and demands of becoming a race driver at the highest level," said Rick Kelly.
Todd Kelly described the series as a vehicle for the team to identify and help develop up and coming talent.
"Our sport has so many barriers to entry that identifying and testing new talent through the TV series means that hopefully we can unearth a future star of Australian motorsport," he said.
"We are delighted with how Cameron Waters is developing, and Sam Reid who came third is also a regular track tester with Kelly Racing."
The Shannons entry is the only confirmed wildcard entry for the 2012 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, which will be held on October 4 to 7.
