Whincup goes back-to-back with Race 9 pole
Defending champion Jamie Whincup matched his qualifying effort for Race 8 on hard tyres with pole position for Race 9 on soft tyres at Barbagallo Raceway.
Whincup snatched pole position at the death with a 55.288, toppling teammate Craig Lowndes by two-tenths.
The session was red flagged with a minute to go when Taz Douglas beached his Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport Commodore on the approach to turn six.
But with the session restarted with just a minute to go not all drivers chose to attempt one more flyer, including Lowndes, allowing Whincup to grab pole with his final flyer. It was Whincup's sixth pole position at Barbagallo Raceway.
While the earlier qualifying session for Race 8 was held on hard tyres, qualifying for Race 9 was on the softs. But it was again the Triple Eight and Ford Performance Racing drivers who were the pacesetters on both sets of tyres.
Ford Performance Racing will occupy the second row of the grid with Will Davison in third and Mark Winterbottom fourth.
Veteran Russell Ingall had his best qualifying result of the season with fifth place, outpacing stablemates James Courtney and Garth Tander who qualified in ninth and 13th respectively. But he was sent to the back of the grid with the team infringing on pitlane rules during the session.
David Reynolds was sixth with Fabian Coulthard in seventh, surviving a near miss with Shane van Gisbergen as the pair battled for clean air late in the session, with the Kiwi duo set to start alongside each other on the fourth row.
Race 8 starts at 11:15am local time with Race 9 at 2:05pm. Both will be held over 50 laps.
