V8 SUPERCARS Australia is again looking at revamping the racing
layout around the Bahrain International Circuit in time for the Desert 400 in
November.
An enhanced map (above) as revealed in V8X#40 shows what could
have been a newly-designed layout for last year’s event, and V8 chairman Tony
Cochrane has suggested that plans are already underway to make the necessary
track changes in time for round 12 of this year’s series. However, the decision
was ultimately not in V8 Supercars Australia’s hands.
"They’re still looking at changing the track but that’s an FIA
decision and it’s not our decision," said Cochrane. "They may extend that a bit
more, it may be changed marginally. But (when) they looked at that last year it
was a bit too late to change it but I’m confident that they going to re-look at
it for this year’s event.
"There’s time, definitely, because they’ve started the process but
whether the FIA approves it I have no idea, that’s in the lap of the gods,"
added Cochrane.
The possible changes include the V8 Supercars using the
north-western corner of the circuit that the Formula One competitors currently
race on. However, instead of using the left-hander at the current turn six, the
V8s would cut across the infield towards the back straight on a piece of track
that the FIA would have to approve to be built.
