MEANWHILE, V8 Supercar boss Tony Cochrane will not back down on a
cementing a Homebush street race on the V8 calendar and has indicated every
possibility of making it a future final round of the championship.
Plans to transform Sydney’s Olympic Park into a street festival
could see similar crowd numbers to that of the season-opening Clipsal 500 in
Adelaide which reach in excess of 250,000 spectators. Costing $15 million
annually to stage, Cochrane said V8SA still stood firm on its intention to cover
those costs and has already received "a tremendous groundswell of support" to
keep pursuing the project.
"We’ve made it very clear that (V8 Supercars Australia) is
prepared to take the annual operating costs as our risk, we’re not expecting the
government or anybody else for that matter to carry that cost," said
Cochrane.
"SOPA – the Sydney Olympic Park Authority – the majority of their
board are all in favour of it so there’s a tremendous groundswell of support for
this event."
The NSW Government has been in possession of V8SA’s second-stage
proposal for approximately 18 months and, despite not receiving any indication
of whether or not the event will ever see the light of day, Cochrane remained
hopeful.
"We haven’t had a ‘no’ yet from the NSW government so we remain
optimistic," said Cochrane.
"I think it’s fair to say I’m relentless and we want to have it as
the final round of the championship. We want to make it a huge event with the
rock concerts and all the rest of it.
