Ford Performance Racing (FPR) returns to Queensland's home
of motorsport,
Queensland Raceway, for the 7th Round of the 2007 Australian
V8 Supercar
Championship Series this weekend.
This completion of this round marks the
half way point of the fiercely
contested 2007 series. After racing to a
strong runner-up finish at
Queensland Raceway last season, the goal of every
FPR team member is to take
the next step up on the podium this year with
drivers Steve Richards and
Mark Winterbottom.
Currently placed 7th
(Richards) and 8th (Winterbottom) in the Championship
standings, strong
performances at Queensland Raceway will enable the Castrol
FPR Falcon and
Orrcon Ford Credit FPR Falcon drivers to rapidly improve
their positions in
order to mount a serious second half of season challenge.
This is the
11th time that the Willowbank circuit (near Ipswich) has hosted
a V8
Supercar Round. Castrol FPR Falcon driver Richards has competed at
every
round held at the venue, with three podium finishes to his credit. The
ultra-consistent Victorian driver has finished in the top six in four out of
his last five visits to Queensland Raceway.
Winterbottom's first FPR
appearance at Queensland Raceway last season saw
him finish 7th overall. The
25 year old driver has amassed thousands of
testing kilometres at this
sunshine state circuit during his early career
and is very familiar with the
intricacies of its paper-clip styled layout.
The Orrcon Ford Credit FPR
Falcon driver is making his fourth V8 Supercar
appearance at the Willowbank
circuit this weekend.
#6 Steve Richards - "Considering Queensland raceway
is the home of all
Queensland teams, it has been kind to me since it opened
for business in
1999. While it may not be the most exhilarating
circuit that we drive on,
it has played host to some incredibly memorable
races over the years. It is
a great spectator's track and provides great
racing because of the long
straights and hard braking zones. The FPR
Falcons were both very
competitive here last year, so a great result is on
the
cards if we fulfil our potential. It would be great to get the
Castrol FPR
Falcon on the podium this weekend."
#5 Mark Winterbottom
- "I didn't gain the result that I was capable of last
year at Queensland
and as a result we missed out on what should have been a
double podium for
the team. We head to this weekend's round in strong form,
ready for a
challenging and more rewarding team result compared to our
compromised round
at Darwin. It has been a long time waiting for a podium
result this season
and I have done more laps at Queensland Raceway than
most, so I'm eager to
get back on the track with a car and team that I know
can get the job
done."
FPR Team Principal, Tim Edwards - "We start the second half of the
season
with the intention of bolting out of the blocks at Queensland Raceway
in the
strongest form possible. This is the home circuit of several of our
major
competitors but that didn't stop us from being very strong there last
year
so while it will be another closely fought round, we are heading there
with
the clear intention of going one better than our runner-up finish last
season."
Established in 1999 as the permanent home of motor racing in
Queensland,
this 3.1 kilometre circuit features a unique combination of four
straights
and a series of constant radius corners on a wide and smooth
surface. The
weekend's action starts with two hours of practice on Friday
afternoon,
followed by the 55 minute qualifying session and the 38 lap
opening race on
Saturday at 3:35pm.
A further two 38 lap races on Sunday
at 11:00am and 1:40pm will decide the
round.
Immediately following
this round (Monday July 23) both FPR Falcon drivers
and the FPR B-Double
merchandise transporter will be setting out to visit
their sunshine state
fans on a special FPR Queensland Road Trip. Organised
in collaboration with
FPR major sponsors Castrol and Orrcon, this five day,
1,400 kilometre trip
will see Steve Richards and Mark Winterbottom making
several public
appearances at Ford dealer locations in the towns of
Bundaberg, Gladstone,
Rockhampton, Mackay and Townsville. To find out more
